| The key to a Healthy
Computer is all about Protection! |
|
 |
Here are some common but not so
common tips to live by:
- Virus Protection - Make sure
you run some type of virus protection on your computer. I recommend you
stay away from Norton's & MacAfee for now as they are targets for hackers.
- Free Virus Programs -
Free AntiVir
AVG Free Anti
Virus
|
- FireWall & SpyWare
Protection - Install good FireWall & SpyWare software. This is harder
for the average person to do but it can add an extra layer of much needed
protection. There are some REALLY good Free programs out there so
you should not have to spend money here. Ask your local GEEK what they
use. I use
Kerio
it's Free for personal use.
- Back Up, Back Up, Back Up -
Always back up your important files to another computer, CD's, Flash Drive or Network
location. I use
SyncBack for this purpose. It is a wonderful Free program
that does an excellent job.
- Email Attachments - MOST
viruses today come to us through email attachments and or websites. Never
open email attachments unless you know who it's from or you are expecting
it.
- AOL - If you are using AOL
as your Internet Provider (ISP) STOP. The monthly cost alone should
be enough to discourage you but if that's not enough here are some more
reasons.
1) EVERY other ISP charges less than AOL.
2) With AOL you pay for them to advertise to you.
3) They stop other ad pop ups but their ads show all the time.
4) If you are conducting business online emails may not get through.
5) The AOL software slows your computer down quit a bit.
6) Once you install the AOL software it acts like a virus spreading
throughout your computer system and is very hard to remove.
